COVID-19 has impacted everyone’s lives over the past year and it is known that those already in disadvantaged circumstances have been hit harder than most. For years education in the UK has seen an attainment gap between disadvantaged students and their peers. This gap has been blown open by school closures and has widened by up to 46%, the impacts of the gap widening will be seen for years to come. A group of ‘Nucleargraduates’ decided to try and mitigate some of these impacts and partnered with Beacon Hill Community School in Cumbria to support their students in a venture called ‘Particle Tutoring’
Particle Tutoring is providing free, after school, personalised online tutoring in Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, History and Geography to around 20 GCSE students a week who volunteer to stay late after school for up to 3 sessions a week. The tutors themselves work remotely and are geographically spread from Edinburgh to Kent using Microsoft Teams which enables them to connect face to face with the students in a safe and productive way. Already over 200 hours of free tutoring has been delivered!
Particle Tutoring has also partnered with the charity ‘Aspatria Dreamscheme’ to help financially support the work they do with young people in the local area namely providing the pastoral support to students that they can’t get in school time.
You can support the work Particle Tutoring does with the Students of Beacon Hill Community School and Aspatria Dreamscheme by becoming a corporate sponsor or an individual donor. Your donation could provide anything from calculators and revision guides to supporting students learning soft skills in a ‘life skills challenge’. All donations go towards improving the education and lives of students that have been significantly impacted by COVID-19.
